Within the list of great modern historians/authors such as Barbara Tuchman, William Shirer, Cornelius Ryan and Steven Ambrose, must be included David McCullough. Labeled the “citizen chronicler” by United States Congress Librarian James Billington, McCullough is the recipient of 2 Pulitzer Prizes, 2 National Book Awards, 2 Francis Parkman Prizes and the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, justifiably deeming him America’s foremost narrator of it’s past.
Whether it be the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Great Flood of 1889 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, or Americans in Paris in the 1800’s, McCullough is sure to make it an interesting and worthwhile read regardless of how obscure the subject matter may seem.
