Candice Millard has become one of my favorite history authors. River of the Gods is my third eperience with her work, and she has made quite an impression. Her pick of topics is interesting to begin with, and her level of detail shows diligent research into her subject matter. River of the Gods, was my final completed read of 2022, and my favorite read of the year!

River of the Gods: Genius, Courage and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the NileRiver of the Gods: Genius, Courage and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile by Candice Millard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My third book by Candice Millard, River of the Gods is the story of Victorian Age exploration into the heart of the dark continent in search of the source of the Nile. I’d read several books over the years about European expeditions into central Africa, and Millard’s work fleshed out the vague details. She brings to life the characters of Speke and Burton, as well as the many others involved in these harrowing undertakings.

One particular incident that I was aware of, was Speke’s calamity involving a beetle that managed to crawl into his ear canal, causing life-long injury to the explorer. Millard brought that event to life with vivid detail. Of course, there were many other adventurous mishaps that occurred, all of which were brought to life in River of the Gods, some horrible, others rather humorous.

Candice Millard has become one of my favorite history writers. She hasn’t let me down yet! Anxiously awaiting her next work!

I highly recommend this read!
