As the plot to assassinate President Lincoln before he was even inaugurated takes a back seat to the many other events of the era, including his actual assassination on April 14th, 1865, this read was sure to be enlightening.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First seeing the title, I only assumed that it was yet another work about the great American president. But this wasn’t about the well-known successful assassination by John Wilkes Booth in 1865, but the conspiracy that could have ended the life of our greatest leader before he did the things that truly made him great.

Perhaps the star of this book, is the great detective Allan Pinkerton, a legend in his own right.

All in all, this read like a suspense novel, even though it’s a work of nonfiction. I couldn’t put it down once started!

Though one of the final reads of the year for me, it’s a favorite of 2020.
